President Clinton's Clarksburg WV Visit & More

As I was focused on building a website for my wife, unique events unfolded in West Virginia, where President Clinton made a May 2, 1997, visit to Clarksburg WV. This event drew major news networks, politicians, and prominent figures, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation. I then received a frantic call where I found myself unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight, as a few minutes later President Clinton looked directly at me and stated it was The First Internet Broadcast of a Presidential Town Hall Meeting, where an ABC News correspondent sat down next to me, never leaving my side. The pressure intensified as a month earlier in Reston VA I had earned my fifth certification in Intranet / Internet technology; the stakes were high—if the Town Hall faltered, I would shoulder the blame, whereas a successful outcome would likely go unrecognized.

As the Town Hall concluded, National, Regional and Local News Medias surged toward me, their microphones colliding asking me of this "Internet" where they pushed my chair back in their excitement, prompting me to wave them away. Amid the chaos, one Huntington WV Newscaster approached me calmly and inquired if the Picture Tel video conferencing equipment was part of the Internet. I clarified that it wasn't, but she expressed her desire to use that equipment for her news report on the Internet. Despite my efforts to explain the distinction, it became clear that the public perception had blurred, with this technology being thrust into the limelight by the president's endorsement, confusing the two concepts in the eyes of the media.

European Excursions

A group of West Virginia citizens came to the aid of a distressed foreign couple, who owned a car reminiscent of our 1956 Imperial, prompting me to lend my assistance. This experience blossomed into friendships that fostered remarkable American and European excursions. Among our new acquaintances was a Vatican historian, whose wealth of knowledge was impressive, and a dynamic philanthropist dedicated to penning historical volumes. He would use the proceeds to purchase supplies for the impoverished and personally deliver them to ensure transparency, challenging everyone’s views on life and death along the way. Notably, he was a passionate stamp collector, culminating in the honor of having his image immortalized on an Austrian postage stamp.

European Sentiments

We participated in an international land rally in Eger, Hungary, with our American-flagged, West Virginia-plated 1959 Imperial, proudly parked beside a luxurious 1983 Russian-era sedan, which our Imperial was deemed superior to by the judges. This experience granted us access to hidden gems and locations few Americans had ventured to before, enriching our journey with unforgettable insights into both the local culture and the spirit of camaraderie shared with fellow rally participants.

All in all, very successful excursions as shared in the sentiments below...

"They want to know when the Americans are coming back"

"I would have to make a list of the people who send their regards"

"They were pleased by the respect shown towards the historic and cultural aspects of their country"

"You have represented your country well; You are from America, so they love America"

"To think Americans, Germans, Hungarians and Romanians all at one table"

"Hello, Valerie, hello, Anthony and family...We have received the package .... It is a miraculous recollection of a wonderful holiday with you…"

"I was surprised to come across your painstaking preparation of Hungarian Goulash and thought that your German friends might like to know about my new book on the famous Hungarian dessert wine...The title is 'Tokajiine - Fame, Fate, Wine...

Oh The Mountain State"  - "Ah Flatlanders I See"

While in Toronto, Canada, my wife encountered a heartfelt response when she shared our roots in West Virginia. The local resonated with pride, exclaiming, "Oh, The Mountain State."

Fast forward to May 22, 2011, as we navigated Austria's Grossglockner Mountain Range, we had to pause due to overheated brakes. When our friend mentioned we were from West Virginia, the mechanic humorously replied, "Oh, Flatlanders I see."

These experiences inspired the creation of www.trigoot.com, a crossover website showcasing our adventures across West Virginia, America, Canada, and Western and Central Europe, all highlighted in the accompanying video.
