Medical Miracle?
"A community grappling with the fallout from these unsettling developments."
2002: The orthopedic therapist’s rehabilitation
plan, carried out with a coordinated team of specialists, resulted in months of
intense work that ultimately brought me to a pain-free, peak physical condition
beyond even my early twenties. I was told that my persistence had produced a
documented medical miracle, overturning a “zero chance of recovery” diagnosis
from some of the most prestigious institutions in the world. My progress gave
hope to others; some were stunned, even speechless. With a renewed sense of
purpose, I gave credit to God, believing I’d been given a second chance. I was
told that my recovery, and the fact that I’d managed to hold onto everything I
had, reflected the strength and support of my wife. In the years that followed,
those affirmations would take on a far different meaning.
My wife and I threw ourselves into the antique-car hobby,
motorcycles, and ballroom dancing. I restored automobiles and played a
key role in constructing a large facility intended to support the shared
interests of the most prominent foreign guests who regarded West
Virginia in a notably positive way. We traveled internationally and
hiked the Alps. Riding the momentum of those years, we decided to pursue
an idea that we believed could benefit everyone. Through it all, we
maintained our careers, our beliefs, and our trust in longstanding civic
organizations, though our involvement with the last of those ultimately
became our undoing. |
December 2002: A
Developmental Timeline was taking shape, one I would formally inquire about
by early 2003. My questions and offers of assistance were dismissed.
By October 2003, major topographical
drainage upheavals created serious challenges, escalating tensions, particularly
with a neighbor who had previously served as a City of Bridgeport Supervisor.
The worsening drainage issues affected not only our property but extended into
broader areas of the city, revealing how far-reaching these changes had become.
The sudden appearance of concrete diversion bolsters at various business
locations underscored the seriousness of the situation. These visible attempts
to redirect and control water flow showed a community struggling to manage the
mounting consequences of these unsettling developments.
In our communications with the law firm
Jackson & Kelly and their Cincinnati Insurance attorney, we stressed the
urgent need to redirect drainage back to its original path before we
built our large car garage in the spring of 2005. They initially agreed,
offering assurances, smiles, and handshakes. Yet, by the latter of 2006
it became clear they had no intention of honoring that commitment. A
"lane" of thought had already warned us this was case. Their failure to
act placed both our red barn and the newly constructed large garage at
risk, underscoring the
Serious Consequences of their inaction and broken obligations.
